Staying invested in India, from anywhere
Non-resident investors can invest in Indian mutual funds on a repatriable basis through an NRE account or on a non-repatriable basis through an NRO account. The mechanics differ, the tax treatment differs, and getting the account type wrong at the start creates problems years later at redemption.
We set the structure up correctly, complete the KYC and FATCA declarations, and handle servicing across time zones so that nobody has to fly down for paperwork.
- NRE (repatriable) and NRO (non-repatriable) routes both supported
- NRI KYC, FATCA and CRS declarations completed end to end
- Nomination and mandate holder arrangements set up properly
- TDS at redemption explained before you invest, not after
- Servicing over email and WhatsApp across time zones
What actually happens, step by step
Confirm residential status
Residential status under FEMA and under the Income Tax Act are not the same thing, and both matter. This gets settled before anything else.
Pick the right account
NRE for repatriable investments, NRO for income earned in India. The choice determines whether proceeds can be sent abroad later.
Complete NRI KYC
Passport, visa or residence proof, overseas address proof and in-person verification as prescribed. We prepare the set and track it through the KRA.
FATCA and CRS
Tax residency declarations are mandatory. Investors from certain jurisdictions face additional restrictions at some fund houses, which we check before applying.
Invest and map
Folios are created, SIPs registered where wanted, and holdings mapped to goals in India or abroad as the case may be.
Plan for redemption
TDS applies to NRI redemptions at prescribed rates. Knowing the treatment in advance avoids unpleasant surprises on the credit amount.
Questions we get asked most
Yes, subject to KYC and FATCA requirements. Investors resident in the United States and Canada face additional constraints, and only some AMCs accept them — we will tell you which before you begin.
Investments made through an NRE account on a repatriable basis can generally be repatriated, subject to prevailing FEMA rules and applicable taxes. NRO-route investments are subject to the annual repatriation limit and its documentation.
TDS is deducted at source at prescribed rates depending on the scheme type and holding period, with treaty benefits available in some cases. Please confirm your specific position with a qualified tax advisor in both countries.
Usually not. In-person verification can generally be completed through the prescribed alternatives for non-residents, including attestation by an authorised official. We will confirm the route that applies to your jurisdiction.
Your existing folios must be updated to NRI status and linked to an NRE or NRO account. Continuing on a resident account after your status changes is not permitted, so this update should be done promptly.
